Fun, Easy Budget DIY Home Decor Using Dollar Store Mirrors
I don’t know about you but being home so much has got my creative juices flowing. Every time I look around my home I imagine new ways to Pinterest it up. Joanna Gaines once said that you shouldn’t just throw things up on your wall just to throw them up on your wall. She said that home decor should reflect who you are as a person or as a family. This is not a direct quote but she said something like this and anyway it hit home.
Lately, I’ve been loving a lot of Modern Farmhouse but I mix it up with some glam. I feel like that’s the way my taste is leaning these days. Entire kitchen makeovers cost way too much money to get into right now not to mention the time that you’re left without being able to use your kitchen. The truth be told painting the cabinets is next on my list.
I’m hooked on YouTube videos that feature simple DIYs using Dollar Store materials. Dollar Tree has an entire crafting corner where you can pick up some great pieces and turn them into something that represents you. I’m still developing my eye for seeing things differently than they are, but watching these YouTube videos helps a ton!
In my most recent trip to the dollar store, I saw these little mirrors. They were as ugly as all get-out. But the longer that I looked at them the more I convinced myself that I could turn them into something that I loved. I grabbed two of one pattern and two of another. One was painted in this tarnished brass gold color with black smudges and the other was painted silver with black smudges. My home decor is pretty much gray and white with black accents and purple bits sprinkled here and there. That’s because I love purple, it’s the greatest color in the world.
I am an absolute freak about spray paint and honestly believe that it can transform anything that you even currently own into something new. Repurposing and giving new life into older items is not only a money saver but it’s also a sanity saver. If you’re anything like me keeping your decor the same for years and years eventually gets on your nerves.
I used my Krylon Fusion all-in-one Paint & primer spray paint in the color gloss white. I love to use spray paint because you can spray at any angle on any surface. This particular spray can is from Lowe’s but I’m sure that you can pick it up at Home Depot, Hobby Lobby, or Michaels. I grabbed a tarp at the Dollar Tree at the same time that I purchased these ugly mirrors. It just comes in so handy when I’m spray painting. I open the tarp and lay it underneath whatever I’m painting to catch the overspray. It makes for easy clean up too.
I think the trickiest part of this whole project was getting the painters tape on the mirror since it was a circle. That took a little while but once I got it on all four mirrors I was good to go. I grabbed the spray paint and the tarp and went out to my back deck opened up the tarp laid my mirrors on top and started spray-painting. This spray paint dries to the touch in about 20 minutes unless it’s super humid outside, which it was, and so it took a little longer to dry. Once it did though, I was able to respray any areas that didn’t completely get covered the first time.
The instructions on the can tell you to wait longer if you want to re-spray I believe it’s 2 hours or after 48 hours. I definitely didn’t even wait for 1 hour and it was fine. I did however wait until the next morning to pull the tape from the mirrors and hang them.
I had to Google the appropriate height to hang things on a stairway because I had absolutely no idea. Turns out it’s 60 in from the floor, or in my case, 60″ from each step. Seemed kind of low at first but after I hung them on the stairway wall I saw that that’s exactly where they belong. I’ll still be adding more things to this Gallery wall but for now, it keeps it from looking so bare. I had gotten so used to apartment living where I avoided hanging things on the walls that needed more than a thumbtack. I didn’t want to have to deal with my landlord’s pickiness when we moved out. Since we’re finally in our own home, I can do whatever I want! I will, however, do it on a budget.
So for less than $10 I was able to come up with something that definitely reflected my current Style in decor. Not too shabby, but a little shabby chic.
