Every day we do things in our lives that we have to do and some that we want to do. Whether we receive a “Thank You” or not we know we will continue because that’s just who we are.

I think that’s the best part of following my passion. I legit LOVE being a makeup artist. It’s so ingrained in who I am that it’s not work at all. I’m able to make an impact on complete strangers with a puff of makeup from my airbrush gun or a swipe of eyeliner. I change people’s demeanor when they see themselves and catch them sitting up a little taller and smile a bit more. That is not a gift I take for granted.

Every time a bride trusts me to provide her with her vision for her big day, I pray and thank God. It’s such a big deal to be a small part of such a huge occasion in people’s lives. Yes, each bride says thank you. Yes, each member of the bridal party does too. Photographers all make sure to express their approval of their clients after I’ve finished and all of that is fuel for the fire. The happiness I provide is a drug for me and I just can’t get enough.

Sometimes I do wonder if I will ever be recognized on a larger scale. I look to makeup artists I admire who are doing their damn thang and think they got their break cuz they live in NYC or Cali or Florida. I wonder if living in a suburb focusing on my beautiful brides is ever going to be enough for someone from the outside to turn their eye my way and recognize my work.

Yes, I’ve worked NYFW and Boston Fashion week, I’ve had the honor of being Key artist for the late Henry N. Jackson for many events (may he rest). I’ve worked in magazines, reality shows, photoshoots, and special events. I’ve learned something at every turn and I’m grateful. It’s not to say I haven’t gotten my big break because in a way I have. I’m one of the most sought after makeup artists in upstate NY. For that too, I’m grateful.

When The New York Hair & Beauty Awards reached out to me to let me know I was shortlisted in the “Makeup Specialist” category I screamed a little and tears formed in my eyes. After years of wondering, the universe had seen me. It had raised me up above the crowd and recognized me. I am no longer just one of the many makeup artists and upcoming artists my community is saturated with. The Universe has tapped me on the shoulder and whispered “Well Done”.

So whether I win or not I’m forever grateful for the honor of being recognized. I’m forever honored to have been seen. I’m humbled and know that though there are still more steps to climb, I’m more than on my way. A wind of change is happening. A second act is brewing. I can feel it.

Thank you Creative Oceanic. Thank you Hair and Beauty Awards for the opportunity to be seen and recognized. The nomination is surreal. Come what may I’m a makeup artist for life.
