One day as I was scrolling through Instagram, I came across an ad of sorts for a product that claims to be the one and only step needed after washing your hair to have fabulous, amazing, bouncy curls as you’ve never seen before. Of course, this caught my attention, and I clicked the link to see what this was all about.

The ad was for a product called Colorwow Dreamcoat for Curly hair. Apparently, the concept was not as new as I thought it was because Allure Magazine had already named its sister product of anti-humidity best of 2017. (Where the heck was I?)

Anywho, the curly hair version states that it has no alcohol which is HUGE since that is the biggest culprit for drying out ANYTHING! I mean that is why they say when your drinking keep water nearby, isn’t it? I digress. They call it a “one and done” for curly hair and so of course, having curly/wavy hair down to my waist I had to see if this in fact was true.

My current routine included many different things. I started with my Ouidad Shampoo and Conditioner, followed by Moroccan Oil curl cream, and right before my hair was completely dry I would use some spray gel and continue to blow dry. This is if I’m not looking for lift, if I am then I of course have to dang near drown my roots in root lifter (my hair is heavy what can I say). So I decide that this magic potion is worth the $24 USD plus shipping if in fact it was going to save me money in the long run with having to purchase less products in the future. I ordered my bottle and eagerly awaited in my window like a cat on a rainy day for my package to appear. When it did I wasted no time in washing my hair so I could try it out.

In reading the directions, I was kind of disappointed to see just how much they tell you to use. I mean with the size of this bottle and the length of my hair, how was this saving me money. Whatever, I bought it so I might as well just follow directions and try it out.

These directions are copied directly from their website: “After shampooing and conditioning (and applying a Color Wow Cocktail if desired), or, alternatively, wetting hair thoroughly, gently squeeze out excess moisture. Comb if desired. Spray liberally, section by section (making sure to spray underneath sections as you go!). Air dry, or blow-dry using a diffuser.” Now if you’re like me you’re focusing on the fact that it’s telling you to spray liberally, section by section MAKING SURE TO SPRAY UNDERNEATH. I probably would have done this anyway but when you have a lot of hair and not a lot of product, the thought of spraying liberally over every square inch of your hair is kind of frustrating not to mention tiring. I did as the bottle asked of me and sprayed all over.

Next came the diffuser with the dryer set to med/high and my head hanging upside down I began my journey to springy curls unlike I’ve never seen. I have to say that my hair didn’t feel weighed down at all. I didn’t FEEL like I put as much product in my hair as I know I did. 15-20 minutes and a cool shot later my hair is dry. I flip my head upright, take a second to get over the headrush and look into the mirror. It. Was…awesome! my hair felt light and clean, waves everywhere (though my natural curls seemed to be kind of stretched out) and my hair looked GOOD! –>

Because after 20+ years of doing makeup I know that even the cheap stuff looks good when you first apply it, I decided not to post a blog/product review until I saw how my hair held up through to the end of the day. THAT would be the proof in the pudding. The day went on, I went about my regular day job, mom duties etc and just before getting into the shower I looked in the mirror at my hair.

The waves were gone, the curls, non-existent. My hair was frizzier than I’d seen it in a while. I actually looked like one of their before pictures and my hair never looks like that! I couldn’t understand what had happened. Did I not use enough? (please note this is impossible), did I use too much? (VERY possible since I was doing the underside too). Either way I felt like I fell for a joke and I was NOT laughing.

So just buyer beware, if you’re going to drop a couple of dollars on your own bottle that this may or may not work for your hair. I did reach out ColorWow and told them what happened to my hair (not trauma or anything but kind of a big deal when you’re selling a product that’s supposed to bring the boing back to your coils). Their reply was that they suggest I use one of their other products in addition to their dream coat for curly hair. Stop, wait, re-read. See that? In addition to their dream coat for curly hair. So there goes the idea that you can use this $24 product alone and get this beautiful head of frizz-free curls.

I know that everyone is different and according to the reviews there are a LOT of people who absolutely love this product. I may or may not try their mousse and see if that helps but for the price point, I was really hoping that it worked for me like they say it should.

If any of you have tried this stuff and have had different results, leave me a comment, and let me know! I wonder if there’s something I should have done differently since I did what the bottle said? Until then my curly top mavens, keep scrunching or airdrying your coils till we get this all sorted out. ๐Ÿ™‚
